Larger-than-WILDLIFE: Aquarium Sculptures (Part 2)

The 2020 Aquarium expansion will include additional sculptures by local artist, Stephen Kelser.

What would it be like to live in a Hermit crabs shell? How do some animals create symbiotic, mutually beneficial connections? These are the kinds of questions that we hope will inspire all minds, young and old, to explore new ecosystems and discover the beautiful, intricate lives of creatures big and small on our new Science Learning Campus. Stephen Kesler, a local sculptor, has made over a dozen pieces for the Aquarium since it opened in 2014. His works range from the life-size Humpback whales and Manta rays to the larger-than-life Poison dart frogs.

Kesler is currently completing a collection of sea creatures, including a Hermit crab with an empty shell to ‘try on for size,’ plus a giant Moray eel drinking fountain featuring a Cleaner shrimp. Both of these pieces demonstrate how some animals rely on other species for homes or—well—’dental work.’

Kesler’s wildlife sculptures are a part of our vision to spark and cultivate curiosity and learning from different perspectives.

The expansion will be opening later this year. You can follow our progress on our social media pages.
