Heterometrus spinifer
Fast Facts
- Asian forest scorpions fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light due to a substance in their exoskeleton called the hyaline layer.
- Despite having multiple eyes, these scorpions have poor vision and rely heavily on touch. They use stiff hairs on their pincers and comb-like structures called pectines on their underside to sense vibrations and navigate their environment.
- While their venom is not lethal to humans and is comparable to a bee sting, Asian forest scorpions are known for their aggressive behavior. They often use their powerful pincers as a primary defense mechanism.
