Keep the Sea Plastic-Free

Newly-designed reusable bags from Harmons Grocery will support Aquarium conservation efforts for coral reefs and sea turtles

Wednesday, October 6, 2021

Harmons Grocery is launching a special-edition reusable shopping bag in support of Loveland Living Planet Aquarium’s conservation programs, including Coral Rescue and Sea Turtle Conservation. Everyone can help reduce plastic pollution by using reusable bags for their grocery shopping. The new Harmons bag is made with up to 90% recycled ocean-bound plastics.

Each bag includes a couple of fun facts about Grey reef sharks, which are found in reef habitats around the world. They need our help to keep tropical reef systems healthy and thriving. You can see Grey reef sharks and other species that live around coral reefs at the Aquarium.

Another kind of animal that you see around coral reefs is the sea turtle. Nearly all seven species of sea turtles are classified as endangered, and one of the challenges they face in the wild is the danger of plastic pollution. Jellyfish are a main food source for sea turtles. Unfortunately, floating plastic can look a lot like a jellyfish to a sea turtle and can kill the turtle when it is ingested by accident. According to the World Wildlife Fund, it is estimated that 52% of all sea turtles have eaten plastic. By walking out of the grocery store with reusable bags instead of plastic bags, you help decrease the amount of plastic that makes it to the ocean.

The new shopping bags will be available in all Harmons stores starting October 8, 2021, and while supplies last. Plus, visit our social media pages on October 8 to learn how you can win a special gift bag from the Aquarium including a $100 Harmons gift card!
